Why should I spay or neuter my kitten or cat?

The SPCA estimates that 5 to 8 million animals are euthanized in shelters across the country every year. Responsible pet owners can help prevent this tragedy. Family Veterinary Clinic believes that cat spay and neutering can contribute to reducing overpopulation in animal shelters, and prevent adding to the homeless feral cat population. Plus, it may help to reduce certain behavioral issues and reduce the risk of some diseases.

What is spaying or neutering?

Spaying is the surgical removal of a female cat’s ovaries and uterus, while neutering is the removal of a male cat’s testicles. Before surgery, we will conduct a thorough examination and blood analysis. Your cat will be put under general anesthesia for the surgery, to minimize pain and discomfort.

When should my cat have the surgery?

Kittens as young as 8 weeks old can safely be neutered or spayed. However, we advise you schedule the surgery before your kitten reaches 5 months old, before the first heat. That way, you can prevent urine spraying and eliminate the chance of pregnancy. Consequently, it is possible to spay a female cat while she’s in heat. And, while older cats can have the surgery, we always recommend the earlier, the better.

Are there risks?

After surgery, we will give you a list of recovery instructions. If you follow them, most cats should be back to normal within a few days. The surgery site heals in about two weeks, and at your follow-up appointment, we remove the stitches.

Will my cat gain weight after surgery?

Many of our clients ask this question. While both neutered males and spayed females have a tendency for weight gain, however, you can prevent it through proper diet and exercise.
